Super Bowl Social Media

I was reading this article from Digital Trends that talked about how well the relationship between social media and sports is doing.  I have to agree that there are lots of upsides to this new and flourish relationship.

One of the greatest things that social media provides us with is people.  People to talk to.  People to share photos with.  People to make new friends with.  Now thanks to apps like PlayUp sports fans are using social media to connect with other sports fans.  This particular outlet allows fans to create chats (open or private) with other fans of a particular sports team, DURING the sporting event.  Which I have to admit, as simple of an idea as that is it's pretty novel and genius.  Personally I can't tell you how many times I wish that I could enjoy a game with friends, but either no one else likes my team or it's just not physically possible for my friends to join me.

But the more important thing that I wanted to talk about this week was of course one of the biggest events in sports... THE SUPER BOWL.  Now I have to be honest I don't really care which team wins or loses, I'm going to be watching for the commercials.  Whether for the commercials for for the games people will be using social media this weekend, according to Twitter during the Super Bowl last year people tweeted over 4,000 tweets per second (TPS)!!!!

It will be interesting this year seeing as companies are not only advertising during the game but are also sponsoring tweets and hashtags during the game.  Then there are companies like Coca-Cola who are taking it a step further by having their iconic polar bears "watch" the game with fans.  If you check out their website CokePolarBowl.com you can learn a little more about it.  I highly recommend checking it out!  Not only are the videos cute but according to Coke the bears will also be watching the game with us on Sunday and be having real time reactions to the game.

So I hope that you will join me in watching the Super Bowl this weekend!  I don't know about anyone else but I can't wait to see all the new ads and what the next great one is going to be.  If anyone else knows of any ads or social media campaigns that I should keep an eye out for this weekend please let me know.  I 'd hate to miss it.  Look for another post after the Super Bowl to talk about what I did and didn't like.

For the Glory,

Megan

  1. So this year I actually cared about who won and who lost the Super Bowl. I am a diehard Giants fan, and this is the second time we have met up with our rivals the Patriots in the championship game. The last time I was a high school senior and I had never heard of a twitter, had you asked me I probably would have thought it was pretty stupid. I do remember Facebook going nuts with everyone getting so excited when the Giants won in 2008. Now four years later, I am an avid tweeter and I tweeted from start to finish of the super bowl. I barely even paid attention to the commercials, but I did notice on twitter that the majority of the tweets were not about the game but were in fact about the different commercials. Some of the more popular ones (like the Dorito’s one) was even trending in the U.S. It was frustrating because I felt like the only one tweeting about the actual game, but I guess no matter who plays more people actually watch the Super Bowl for the commercials and the half-time show. That was another thing that was highly tweeted about. Madonna’s failed attempt at a performance, or so me and most of the people I follow on twitter thought. From what I saw people were not singing her praises after that performance.

  2. I am not much of a football fan but I always watch the Super Bowl for the commercials and the half-time show. This year I was very disappointed by the commercials. I felt like most of them tried to be funny but instead of laughing they just left me scratching my head, wondering what their companies marketing team was thinking. For example, the Go Daddy commercial attempted to use sex appeal by having Danica Patrick and Jillian Michaels use body paint spelling out GoDaddy.com on a model but instead of bringing awareness to the website the commercial seemed out of context and stupid to me. I would think that companies would produce their best commercials since the Super Bowl is the most-watched television event in American History. Especially since a 30-second spot of Super Bowl commercial airtime costs over $10,000, companies should conduct more research about how to effectively target and capture their audience’s attention. As far as the half-time show goes I enjoyed watching Madonna sing and perform and I liked that she sang old and new songs. However when she sang “Like a Prayer” I thought that the members in the choir looked like penguins with their black and white robes. I also did not like the Cee Lo Green performed with her. He was a random addition to the performance and he didn’t really do anything but rock back and forth in a sequin robe.

  3. Super Bowl commercials are always very interesting and definitely use social media to their advantage. Almost every commercial had a hashtag or twitter account shown at the end of the commercial. I think it's really interesting for every brand to be using the hashtags and hoping it will create buzz on twitter.
